4-H CLOVER NEWS
April, 2008
Dear 4-H Volunteer:
Spring has finally come! The 4-H enrollment for fair participation deadline has passed so now all members can get started with their projects for this year. A final copy of your club roster is in your club mailbox. Please look over everything very carefully - - typos can be corrected, but any additions cannot be made after April 1.
I would like to extend an open invitation to all parents and volunteers to attend the Mock Crash Docu-Drama. The Mock Crash will begin at 9:40 a.m. on April 22 at the Richland County Fairgrounds. This is a very important event that is held annually during prom and graduation season to help in the prevention of drinking and driving by our youth. Please mark your calendars and attend if you can. This also is an acceptable volunteer certification credit for 2008. If you plan to attend, please be at the fairgrounds by 9:15 a.m. And let Judy know you are there so you get the credit.
As we begin the new project year for 4-H, be aware of how important all of you are to us at the Extension Office. Though at times we can get pretty busy, it is a pleasure to serve each and every one of you. You all do a good job with the “education of 4-H”, plus keep members and parents advised of deadlines and important events that are coming up. You are our link to 4-H members and we do appreciate all that you do to encourage, instruct and give support to the 4-H program in Richland County. THANKS FROM ALL OF US AT THE EXTENSION OFFICE!!
Sincerely yours,
Judy Villard, Ph.D

The horse registration fee in 2008 is $20/per horse payable at the time of registration. In 2008 there will be NO sharing of 4-H/FFA project horses. If you have questions, please contact the Extension Office or see the 2008 Horse Guide.
Help the Sr. Fair Board Ladies Auxiliary
The Ladies Auxiliary has a very important role in what goes on at the Richland County Fairgrounds. It is with their financial assistance that a lot of things have been repaired and improvements made to the fairgrounds. 4-H’ers 13 and older, parents and/or advisors who would be willing to help in the cafeteria before and during the fair should contact Pat Wells through the fairgrounds (419/747-3717) to offer your assistance. This is a good way for 4-H to improve the relationship between 4-H and the Senior Fair Board. Let’s show them we are willing to help wherever they need help. The ladies also need help serving at other functions throughout the year. Please call Pat to volunteer.
Quality Assurance Training in 2008
The next QA training will be April 19 (this is a Saturday) at 9 a.m. The third and FINAL training will be May 8 from 7-8 p.m. All sessions will be held at the Longview Center. You must have this training complete or you will not be permitted to show or sell your livestock (also includes lactating goats and dairy). If you have questions or concerns please contact the Extension Office. Quality Assurance Training must be complete by July 1, 2008 or you will not be able to show or sell your animals at the 2008 fair. There are other clinics that will count toward QA training. Please check with the Extension Office for these other opportunities or the website http://richland.osu.edu. Although not required, it is strongly recommended that parents attend this quality assurance training with the youth. Note: Quality Assurance training will count for volunteer certification credit in 2008.

Just a reminder that “4-H Day” at Cedar Point will be June 27, 2008. Do you have members who need to enhance their public speaking skills and gain extra coaching for the Public Speaking Contests or for other club work? If so, please let them know about the Public Speaking Clinic to be held in April 21 (NOTE: date change from calendar) at the Longview Center beginning at 7 p.m. Many helpful tips will be shared that evening. Note: Judy will be traveling with 4-H members on the 14th so the date had to be postponed.
OSU Pre-Vet Day
If you are in high school and exploring the career of veterinary medicine, The Ohio State University is hosting a Pre-Vet Day, Saturday, April 12. There will be two sessions - - one session in the morning from 9 a.m. until noon and one session in the afternoon from 1-4 p.m. Each session will feature an overview of what it takes to get into vet school and a tour of the vet campus at Ohio State. Also on April 12th, the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine will be holding an open house to explore what a veterinarian really does and how to become one. For more information or to register for Pre-Vet Day call (614) 688-4659, e-mail tyson.46@osu.edu or visit the website at http://cfaes.osu.edu/visit.
Tagging Times and Locations
Please remind members who have market lambs, goats, and feeder calves that tagging day is May 17, 2008. The locations for tagging will be the Richland County Fairgrounds or the Shelby Ag Building. You should plan to be there between the hours of 8:00 a.m.– NOON. If for some reason you cannot make it to any of these places in the time allotted, please call someone on the Livestock Sale Committee to set up a tagging time for your animals. Loren Kranz is the President and his phone number is 419-896-3534.
Theme For Fair Booths in 2008
The theme for the 2008 Richland County Fair Booths will be along the lines of the 4-H Camp themes (Captain Hook, pirates, treasure chests, etc., but NO SKULL AND CROSSBONES will be permitted). The Booth Sign-up Sheet is in the packet of forms and will be due in the Extension Office by June 1. Booth space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have questions and concerns about this, please feel free to give the Extension Office a call. NOTE: We have had questions that the theme “Getting Hooked on 4-H” was about fishing. The theme is “Pirates”. Please call the Extension Office if you have questions about this year’s theme.
Need a Community Service Project?
Once again, the Richland County Solid Waste Department is looking for 4-H clubs to commit to two hours during the fair to clean the fairgrounds. They provide gloves, brooms, and dust pans and each crew member receives a hat and t-shirt to keep. Each shift should consist of six 4-H members. If your members want to commit to this project, call the Richland County Solid Waste Office at 419-774-5861 now and get your name on the list.
Goat, Sheep, and Beef Clinics
The Animal Clinic to be held at the Fairgrounds on April 26 will begin at 9 a.m. The schedule for the clinic will be as follows:

The Rabbit workshop will begin at 1:00 and run through 4 p.m. You must attend the entire sessions of each of these to get your Quality Assurance training credit fulfillment (entire poultry or entire rabbit session). Registration will begin 1/2 hour before the program starts for each.
Note Concerning Hog QA
IMPORTANT: The only livestock not covered at hte above clinics will be hogs. Hog exhibitors must attend one of the other QA sessions. Please call the Extension Office if you have questions about the Quality Assurance training credit.
Miniature Horse Clinic
Jayme Kilgore will conduct a “Miniature Horse Clinic” on May 17 from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. The clinic will be held at the Fairgrounds and will have lots of educational information for those interested in the Pilot Project (Self Determined) Miniature Horse.
Active Advisor Status
In accordance with the Ohio 4-H volunteer thrust to promote leadership development of 4-H advisors, ALL 4-H volunteers must enhance their personal development by attending at least one of the “Volunteer Certification Meetings” to remain an active volunteer in Richland County. Please sign the attendance records at these events, so that your name can go into the computer program that you have attended the required development activity. The last of these meetings will be held May 13, 2008. This information has been posted in past newsletters, online and at Super Clinics, so don’t miss out and not be entitled to a 2008 fair pass. There have been and are still many opportunities to obtain this status. If you have questions, please call the Extension Office for dates and times.
In Need of Market Animals
If you are having trouble locating market animals for your projects, please contact the Extension Office. People contact us to say that they have animals available or sales that are coming up with these animals. Please do not hesitate to call to see if we have names and sale dates that you might be able to obtain an animal through these contacts. Occasionally people will bring items in to the office to be distributed to advisors through their club mailboxes. Advisors please check your mailboxes regularly.
Dog Obedience Registration Due May 1
The dog obedience registration form and information will be mailed out to all those members signing up for the projects #201 (obedience, showmanship, performance, guide dog) within the next two weeks. The registration form will be due back into the Extension Office by May 1. If you have questions about this project before the information is sent out, please call the Extension Office. If you are interested in more info on the dog project, you can go online to the following website (southcenters.osu.edu/4h/dog/index.htm) and find out all the information on how the dog show will be conducted at the Ohio State Fair this year. Something new at the Richland County Fair in 2008 is going to be the Open Dog Show to be held immediately following the regular dog show on Friday morning. Details about the show will be in the letter sent to all members taking dog projects.
If you have members enrolled in the Dog Project (#201) in 2008, the Dog Committee has asked that members and parents attend the next Dog Committee meeting, April 15 at the Longview Center, beginning at 6 p.m. They will go over the new project books and the changes that have taken place with the dog registration and how that will affect their fair entry. If you have questions and concerns about this new project, please attend or contact Stephanie Bargo at 419-529-9845 or call the Extension Office at 419-747-8755.

**********OLDER YOUTH NEWS**************
JL’s Spaghetti Supper
Thank to all who helped to make the Spaghetti Supper a success again this year. This was a great social event. It was nice to see familiar faces that come year after year in support of the older youth in Richland County. Also thanks to those of you who furnished pies and other desserts to end the meal on a “sweet” note. The funds from this event go towards the Older Youth Trip and other award trips for those that participate. Hat off to Karen Steele, Terri Rieman and Rita Floro for cooking up the spaghetti and preparing the meal.
Mock Crash
The Mock Crash Coalition and the Richland County 4-H Youth Safety Council will once again be conducting the Mock Crash Docu-drama at the Richland County Fairgrounds on April 22, 2008. The Mock Crash will begin at 9:40 a.m. This docu-drama is to impress upon each and everyone that you DO NOT “Drink and Drive” and seat belts save lives. You are welcome to attend this impressionable safety program. This year we have more than 1500 junior and seniors planning to attend from 11 high schools in Richland County. If you have never attended one of these docu-dramas, you would be very impressed with the content of the program and to see the expressions on the faces of the students who file through to see the crash victims. This really does have an impact on the youth who attend.
