JUNIOR FAIR SHOWMANSHIP RULES 2008

NEW IN 2008:  You MUST pre-register for each species showmanship eligible class you intend to participate in the day before each species show or you will not be permitted in showmanship.

1.       Only 4-H and/or FFA livestock exhibitors may participate in the Junior Fair Showmanship classes.

2.       Contestants must show an animal entered in a Junior Fair livestock class and must be the bona fide owner; in addition, the animal must remain on exhibit for the entirety of the fair, unless released by the veterinarian or the General Junior Fair Superintendent.

3.       All species will require showmanship sign up the day before their species showmanship class with the exception for horses (which will have sign up on day of premium show).

4.       Preparation for showing must be done by the owner, Fitting – 50%, Showing – 50%, (a) Fitting includes:  1.  Soundness, condition, quality and, in case of beef animals, sheep and swine, firmness and uniformity of covering.  2.  Cleanliness of hide, hair, hoofs, and horns.  3.  General appearance of animal and prevailing breed. (b) Showing:  1.  Appearance of exhibitor and equipment used to show animals.  2.  Ability to properly pose animal. 3.  Exhibitor must demonstrate ability to move animal around ring as directed by judge.

5.       Order of showmanship classes in all species shall be:  Senior-Intermediate (swine & rabbit only)-Junior-Beginners (swine & rabbit only)-Novice-Pro showmanship.

6.       Exhibitors may only enter one showmanship class per species, with the exception of the Pro Showman and Showman of Showmen classes.

7.       Contestants in the Novice class may ONLY be first-year exhibitors in that species.  NOTE:  Additional requirements for beef exhibitors (breeding beef, steers, & feeder calf first year exhibitors - - see Beef Showmanship Section).  Contestants in Jr. Showmanship shall be 13 years or younger as of January 1 of the current year.  Exception to this rule is if a Jr. Showmanship winner of a previous year enters Sr. Showmanship in that particular species, that showman may NEVER return to Jr. Showmanship in that particular species.

8.       The swine showmanship classes will be broken down into the following classes according to January 1, current year age:  Novice A – first year exhibitors (8-13 year olds); Novice B – first year swine exhibitors (14 years and older); Beginner – 9 and 10 year olds; Junior – 11 year olds; Intermediate – 12 & 13 year olds; Senior – 14 year olds and older; Pro – all current year winners and any previous swine showmanship class winner still exhibiting Junior Fair swine.

9.       The beef feeder calf showmanship classes will be broken down into the following classes according to January 1, current year age:  Novice A – first year exhibitor (8-13 year olds); Novice B – first year beef exhibitor (14 years and older); and Junior, Senior and Pro showmanship classes. 

10.   The goat showmanship classes will be broken down into the following classes according to January 1, current year age (if at least 5 exhibitors/animals in each age division:  Novice A – first year goat exhibitor (8-13 year olds); Novice B – first year goat exhibitor (14 years and older).

11.   The rabbit showmanship classes will be broken down into the following classes according to January 1, current year age (if at least 5 exhibitors/animals in each age division:  Novice A - first year rabbit exhibitor (8-13 year olds); Novice B – first year rabbit exhibitor (14 years and older).  Beginner – 9 and 10 year olds; Junior – 11 year olds; Intermediate – 12 & 13 year olds; Senior – 14 year olds and older; Pro – all current year winners and any previous rabbit showmanship class winner still exhibiting Junior Fair rabbits.

12.   The Pro Showman classes will be open to all showmanship winners in the current or past years who are still exhibiting in the species they won.  Previous Pro Showman winners in a particular species may repeat participation in a particular species where they have won as long as they continue exhibiting in that species in the current year.

13.   Winners of a novice, beginner, junior, intermediate or senior showmanship class will not be eligible to compete in the same species and division the following year.

14.   Showmanship classes must name one first place winner (one person per placing).  If the judge cannot make a determination of one winner, the judge would be encouraged to ask more questions in showmanship.

15.   The Junior Fair Board reserves the right to have any unmanageable animals removed from the fairgrounds.  Uncontrollable animals shall be dismissed from showmanship classes at the discretion of the show team and/or judge for safety precautions.

AWARDS – Showmanship participation ribbons will be presented by

the Richland County Agricultural Society.
